From August 11 to 20, many of Europe's men's soccer leagues kicked off their 2023-24 seasons, with returning champions aiming to add another trophy to their collection and underdogs seeking to break through and prove their worth. Fans of the professional teams were eagerly anticipating the return of televised fútbol. To celebrate this fresh start, here’s an overview of the four top leagues and their prospective winners for this season.
The Premier League, top of men’s football, began its season on August 11, with Man City winning 3-0 against Burnley and asserting their presence for the new year. Looking ahead to this season, Arsenal and Manchester City are the top contenders to win the league. However, teams like Chelsea and Manchester United may, at the very least, qualify for the Champions League after months of selecting new talent for the year. The bottom-ranked teams in the league will not be overlooked, as their performance in the next few months will determine whether they stay or are relegated.
The Spanish football league, La Liga, commenced on August 11, just like its English counterpart. Rayo Vallecano emerged victorious with a 2-0 win against Almeria, while Valencia secured their first three points in the league with a 2-1 victory over Sevilla. La Liga viewers have high expectations for Real Madrid this season, particularly with the addition of Jude Bellingham. Meanwhile, their main competition, F.C. Barcelona, struggled during their kick-off game against Getafe, drawing after winning the league title and collecting several trophies in the last season. Fans hope that the team will improve and perform well in the coming games.
Werder Bremen and Bayern München kicked off Germany’s equivalent, Bundesliga, with Bayern taking the win 4-0. Going into the new year, fans expect the main competition to be between Bayern München, Dortmund, and RB Leipzig, the three most-known German teams in the world. Many English fans abroad will be supporting Bayern throughout the year, as the team secured England’s top goal scorer, Harry Kane. It will be interesting to see what other additions are brought to the teams to get more points during the season and finish higher in the Champions League.
The Italian men's league, Serie A, known for its excellent defense, began its season on August 19th with four matches. Hellas Verona beat Empoli 1-0, while Napoli won 3-1 against Frosinone. Florentina emerged victorious with a score of 4-1 against Genoa, and Inter Milan won 2-0 against Monza. Serie A has multiple potential winners this year, including Inter Milan, the runner-up for the Champions League, Napoli, the 2022-23 league champions, AC Milan, Juventus, and Roma. AC Milan's recent acquisition of Christian Pulisic has generated excitement among fans in the United States, who hope he will have the opportunity to shine, unlike his time at Chelsea.
